Elderly woman killed in La Mesa car accident identified

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities released the name Tuesday of a 92-year-old woman killed when her husband accidentally ran her over with their car outside a relative's East County home.

Berniece Mosley of San Diego was fatally injured about 11:30 a.m. Monday in front of her sister's house at the corner of Broadmoor Drive and Broadmoor Place in La Mesa, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office.

Mosley was in the front passenger seat of the couple's 1998 Honda Accord when it abruptly accelerated in reverse for unknown reasons as her spouse, also 92, was trying to back out of the driveway, police Lt. Dan Willis said.

The car lurched into the street, veered around in a "big semicircle arc" and careened backward over a sidewalk and onto a sloping lawn in front of the residence, Willis said. At that point, Mosley was ejected from the vehicle, which then ran over her. She died at the scene.

Investigators were trying to determine if Mosley's husband of 70 years inadvertently "floored" the Accord -- possibly due to a medical crisis of some kind -- or if a mechanical problem might have been to blame for the sudden acceleration, according to Willis.

"He certainly wasn't intoxicated or anything like that," the lieutenant said.

At the request of police, the state Department of Motor Vehicles will re-evaluate the man's suitability for a driver's license.
