Local musicians' song blasting off into space on Shuttle Endeavour

SAN DIEGO (CNS/News 8) - A song recorded by three San Diego area musicians will be played to astronauts aboard the space shuttle Endeavour.

"Luna Llena," originally called "Moon," was written by Carlsbad-based musician Allan Phillips in 1997. Lyrics were added by jazz guitarist  Jose Molina Serrano of La Mesa. Musician and Olympian high school teacher Joaquin "Quino" McWhinney performed the song. McWhinney is also vocalist for the local band "Big Mountain."

"Luna Llena" will serve as the astronauts' wake-up call.

"For me, getting to have a song in outer space means that anything is possible," Phillips told News 8. "This song has an inviting kind of feeling...  When [the astronauts] hear this song, they're able to feel how diverse our world is."

"It's one of the most unbelievable feelings," added Serrano in a telephone interview with News 8. "It's like something you don't expect in your life, and when it happens, it's one of the most marvelous things you can imagine."

Serrano and McWhinney have flown out to witness the Endeavour's launch in person.

Their song "Luna Llena" is truly a family affair: Serrano's wife Malia helped with the lyrics and Phillip's daughter Natalya provided back-up vocals.
