Murrieta choir director charged with raping teen

Posted: Updated:

MURRIETA, Calif. (AP) - A Southern California choir director with a prior child sex conviction has been charged with raping a 16-year-old girl who sings in the church choir.

Court and jail records show 26-year-old Joseph Jermaine Spencer of Murrieta surrendered Thursday after he was charged with rape by force or fear, unlawful sex with a minor and other counts.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise says Spencer is the music director and assistant pastor at Mountain View Community Church in Temecula.

The girl told Murrieta police on Monday that Spencer raped her earlier in the day at his home.

Investigators say Spencer is on probation in another child sex case and he is forbidden from having unsupervised contact with minors. Despite the conviction, he doesn't appear on California's Megan's Law online database of registered sex offenders.
