San Diego Muslim leader praises 'elimination' of bin Laden

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The leader of the San Diego chapter of a Muslim advocacy organization said Monday they welcomed the "elimination" of Osama bin Laden as a threat to the United States.

Hanif Mohebi, the area's executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told reporters that bin Laden never represented Muslims or the Islamic religion.

"Let us remember that not only did he take thousands of American lives, but he took the lives of countless Muslim people around the world," Mohebi said. "It is clear our community was never attached to this man or his organization, al-Qaeda."

He said the death of the al-Qaeda founder won't be the end of terrorism, but it could be an opportunity to carve out a new direction in relations between the United States and the Islamic world.

While one cannot celebrate anyone's death, the killing of bin Laden will bring "a sigh of relief" to Muslims because so many people died in the search for him, according to Mohebi.

He said he received an email from someone who said he was pleased that bin Laden was dead because Muslims would not have to deal with this "boogeyman" in their midst.
