This year we're staying right here in San Diego, and I'm going to show you some great bargain staycations right in our own backyard. We begin at a cozy cottage by the sea.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Staycations aren't just about families. There's lots of fun to be had for singles, couples and friends who are looking for daytime relaxation and nighttime activities, and you'll find plenty of both at a retro hotel on Rosecrans offering a great summertime deal.

When the sun goes down on our California town, a party breaks out at The Pearl. In fact, the night time is the right time to be at this 23-room campy boutique hotel on Rosecrans Boulevard.

"It was built in the 50s. It was called the Sportsman's Lodge and the owner bought it about three years ago in 2007, and he wanted to keep a lot of the original architecture. So that's where the whole vintage meets modern came into it. We put a lot of amenities, but kept the original architecture," Christina Archer said.

Rooms are small, but tastefully appointed.

"The Strand Room is our largest room. It's about 300 to 350 square feet. They all have a king-sized platform bed, a flat screen television, a patio with bamboo as well as a pet beta fish," Christina said.

Most nights, happy hour at The Pearl is off the hook.

"It really is a 25- to 73-year-old crowd," Christina said.

The kitchen is getting rave reviews.

"The mission of our restaurant is to embrace local and sustainable products, so we always try to stay local, stay sustainable, organic whenever we can," Christina said.

Nights at The Pearl are peppered with special events.

"We do in-house events such as movie nights, surf movie premieres, things like that, and we also do a lot of private events. People rent out the whole venue for parties, wedding receptions. We were just voted as one of the top places to have a low-budget wedding reception in San Diego," Christina said.

The staff of The Pearl is gearing up for the season.

"We have a real great summer 'staycation' package that we're doing now. It starts actually June 1. It goes through mid-October, it's called the "two-night delight". So what you get is a Jewel Room with a $100 food, beverage credit for $299 Sunday through Thursday, $350 on weekends.

"It's a very sexy vacation. We are very vintage meets modern. We have a large demographic and we're a lot of fun. You don't ever have to leave and that's the great thing about the package. You get to stay here, dine here -- you get the whole experience," Christina said.

So pack up the kids, take them to grandmother's and head to The Pearl to get sexy in the city. Rooms at The Pearl are clean, functional and fun. This is not your mother's Marriott. This boutique hotel has been maintained in the tradition to keep it's original 50s feel. The staff is friendly and the nighttime vibe is very hip. The Pearl's summertime special can be booked now, but starts on June 1.
