Sex offender to be sentenced for attempted rape

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sentencing was scheduled Wednesday for a registered sex offender who pleaded guilty to tackling a woman in Hillcrest and trying to rape her, as well as breaking into the bedroom of another woman and making nearly $800 worth of calls to a sex line.

David Thomas Blood, who has convictions for lewd and lascivious acts with a child and oral copulation, faces up to 48 years and four months to life in prison when he is sentenced today.

Blood admitted he was free on bail in connection with arrests for contracting without a license and making the calls to the sex line, when he tried to rape the woman in Hillcrest, prosecutors said.

Blood pleaded guilty to 16 counts, including assault with intent to commit rape, making a criminal threat, grand theft, burglary, drug charges, diversion of funds and misdemeanor charges of contracting without a license.

The victim, 32, told San Diego police that Blood approached her on a trail off the 1000 block of Myrtle Way about noon on Aug. 11 and engaged her in conversation. Moments later, he grabbed her, pulled her to the ground and straddled her, according to police.

As she struggled, her attacker threatened to "cut" her, police said. She began screaming, and he ran off, police said, adding that Blood was arrested nearby shortly afterward.

Separately, Blood posed as a licensed contractor but failed to pay subcontractors; he also overcharged homeowners for work done in 2008 and 2009, according to prosecutors.
