LA JOLLA (CNS) - The "Swim With Mike" fundraiser for disabled athletes will make its first appearance in San Diego Saturday at UCSD's Canyonview Aquatic Center.

The event raises college scholarship money for disabled athletes. Since its inception in 1981, more than 100 athletes have been given $10.6 million.

For the 2010-11 school year, 45 student athletes were awarded a combined $770,000.

"Swim With Mike" started as a way to support former USC swimmer Mike Nyeholt. Eleven of the students current funded attend USC.

According to the organization, applicants must have:

- suffered an illness or injury that resulted in a disability that substantially limits him or her

- have participated in organized high school or college athletics before the illness or injury

- meet admissions requirements of the selected university

- maintain at least a 2.5 grade-point average while enrolled
