Foundation gifts tabbed shirts to young patients at Rady Children's Hospital

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Some brave boys and girls got a little help in their battle against cancer Monday, and I had the priviledge of joining in.

Rady Children's Hospital welcomed the Emilio Nares Foundation Monday to hand out special t-shirts to young cancer patients. The Loving Tabs Healing T-shirts open up at the left shoulder to allow easy access to chemo ports.

Leukemia survivor Martin Quiroga demonstrated the shirt. He says it's a great gift that can make a tough time a little easier.

"It's usually very early in the morning when they need to get their medication through their port, and sometimes they're very tired or cold and just don't want to take their shirt off, but they have to get what they need," Martin said.

Monday's event was also aimed at lifting spirits, with clows and face painting for the courageous young patients.

The Emilio Nares Foundation helps families of children battling cancer. It was started by Richard and Diane Nares after they lost their son to cancer back in 2000. He was just five years old.

"I know he's smiling down on us, because it's really important for the children," Richard Nares said.
