Vintage Himmel: 20 years ago today - Solana Beach barbers

Posted: Updated:

SOLANA BEACH (CBS 8) - It was 20 years ago today that I first set foot in a Solana Beach barbershop. There I met two haircutters. One who was completing his first year on the job, the other who had already logged 45 years. And although neither of them work in the shop anymore, both of them amazingly are still on the job.

At 70, Jim Rogers was the dean of Solana Beach Barbers. In the chair next to him was 20-year-old Andy Granger. For the last 19 years, Andy has owned his own shop in downtown Escondido on Grand Avenue. He's still cutting it old school.

"It seems like there's getting to be fewer and fewer of the true traditional barbershops anymore. So I've just been enjoying more and more of a niche market here," he said.

Andy fondly remembers the way it was. He'll also never forget his roots.

"I have a great trade and make a great living, and I really owe it all to the start they gave me (at Solana Beach Barbers)," he said.

At age 90, Jim Rogers still cuts hair three days a week at the Cove Barber Shop in Solana Beach, just around the corner from where I met him 20 years ago today.

"I want to keep going," he said.

Two barbers separated by a half-century, but joined by a commitment to service and a dedication to their craft, just like they had 20 years ago today.
