Residents in southeast S.D. to hold peace walk

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - With 13 people killed or wounded in shootings since late April, residents in southeast San Diego will hold a "Reclaiming Our Community Walk" Sunday.

Overall crime in San Diego is down this year, but gang violence is increasing, according to the San Diego police. When crime statistics were made public last week, police said six people died in gang-related attacks so far this year, compared to four last year.

More than 100 people demonstrated for several days after 34-year-old Nasheed Aluqdah was fatally shot in Lincoln Park on April 30. Police said they were going to flood the area with officers and detectives to tamp down the violence.

Sunday's event will include a prayer before the walk and a barbecue afterward.
