MEMPHIS (AP) — Flood victims in Memphis, Tenn., have had a chance to tell President Barack Obama about their ordeal.

A spokesman says one woman told the president that she'd been flooded out of her house, forcing her family into a community shelter. Another woman said prayer had spared her house, which became a refuge for a family member who had to abandon his home.

The Mississippi river crested at Memphis last week, just inches short of the record set in 1937. Some low-lying neighborhoods were inundated, but the city's high levees protected much of the rest of Memphis.

The president was in Memphis Monday to address graduates at a high-achieving high school.
