Pilot uninjured after F/A-18 skids off runway at MCAS Miramar

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Marine Corps pilot escaped injury Tuesday when the F/A-18 fighter jet he was flying slid off a runway during a landing at USMC Air Station Miramar, a base spokeswoman said.

The accident at the northern San Diego military station occurred about 1:30 p.m., according to 2nd Lt. Maureen Dooley.

The rough landing caused some damage to the aircraft, but the extent of repairs that will be necessary was unclear this evening, the lieutenant said.

The plane did not catch fire, and the pilot, who was flying by himself, did not have to eject, according to Dooley.

The mishap had no effect on normal operations at the base, she said.
