Keys Crek Lavender Farm: Lavender fields forever

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Many times the most exotic experiences are found off the beaten path. Take the Keys Creek Lavender Farm for example.

"We say we're not in the middle of nowhere. We're at the end of nowhere," Alicia Wolfe said.

Tucked away on 8 1/2 acres in Valley Center, this fragrant oasis is a shimmering sea of purple, offering the perfect retreat for a South African native in search of spiritual transition.

"When I found this it was in September 2008 and everything was dormant, no lavender to be seen, but I just feel in love with it," Alicia said. "Later when the lavender bloomed it was just a bonus. It's a dream come true."

This is a working farm. All the lavender is harvested by hand and distilled right on the property.

"Boiling the water will create the steam, the steam warms the plant material, the plant material releases the essential oil and carries it over," Chris Kurisu said. "We'll distill about 400 pounds of lavender plant and get 32 ounces of essential oil."

All of their therapeutic potions and lotions are for sale in the gift shop.

"If you have a headache, it's great to put on your temples," Alicia said.

There's a tiny tea room on the property, and because Keys Creek Lavender Farm is all about healing, they have a masseuse on the premises.

"We're open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 4 p.m.; we have tours at 10:30 and 1:30," Alicia said.

Alicia Wolfe is living the dream. A dream she'll share with anyone willing to travel to the end of nowhere.
