ATM stolen from Chula Vista check cashing store

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Thieves smashed their way into a South Bay check-cashing business in a pickup truck early Friday and stole an ATM, police reported.

Witnesses reported seeing the white vehicle crash through a front window of the shop in the 1300 block of Third Avenue in Chula Vista shortly before 3 a.m., Lt. Scott Arsenault said.

The bandits yanked the cash machine from its moorings and loaded it into the truck before fleeing to the east on Palomar Street, according to Arsenault.

Based on a torn-off driver's side mirror found at the scene, investigators believe the pickup, described as "beat up," is a Ford F-250, the lieutenant said.

"I suspect they probably dumped the truck nearby, but we haven't been able to find it," he said, adding that the vehicle likely was stolen.

The witnesses were unable to provide descriptions of the thieves or confirm how many took part in the heist.

It was unclear how much money was in the ATM.
