USD scandal suspects plead not guilty to robbery

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Two men charged in a University of San Diego basketball bribery scandal have pleaded not guilty to a home invasion robbery.

The San Diego Union-Tribune says Steve Goria and David Gates entered pleas Thursday to felony robbery and burglary charges.

Goria's attorney, Brian Watkins, denies that his client was one of the masked gunmen who took $70,000 from a family in their Rancho San Diego home last December.

Prosecutors contend that federal wiretaps caught Goria and Gates discussing a plan to rob the house four days before the attack.

Two other men also have pleaded not guilty in the case.

Goria and Gates also are among 10 people charged with taking part in a gambling ring at the university that included players and assistant coaches. They have pleaded not guilty.
