3.1 quake reported near Tecate, Mexico

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A magnitude 3.1 struck southwest of Tecate Saturday, and may have been felt in East County, according to automated seismographs and computers operated by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The shock was centered about 26 miles east-northeast of Ensenada, or about 60 miles southwest of Tecate. It hit at 9:05 a.m.

The reported quake was not yet reviewed by seismologists. Experts at the Southern California Earthquake Center have cautioned that earthquake readings from quakes south of the border are not always exact, because the automated system does not have real-time seismographs in Mexico.
