A senior swinger

ESCONDIDO (CBS 8) - When it comes to golf, Jeannie Buckman was a late bloomer.

"I started when I was in my 40s, because that was a rich man's sport when I was a little girl," she said.

But out here at Escondido Country Club, she's a pioneer.

"I'm a charter member for 43 years," Jeannie said.

And even though Jeannie got a late start, she's made up for lost time.

"I've had eight holes-in-one on this course. I have captured all the par threes at least once or more. And maybe, I hope to have one or more before I'm done," she said.

At age 81, Jeannie Buckman still has an edge.

"I play on three teams that are competitive," she said. "I'm here at least three times a week, Tuesday, Thursday, Fridays I play and of course we have team play in between," Jeannie said.

You can't miss Jeannie. Betty Boop covers, red golf cart, and she's the one who plays with the colored ball. And Jeannie still has skills.

"I average anywhere from a 15 to 20, go up in the winter, go down in the summer. I play better in warm weather," she said.

But mostly, Jeannie Buckman is out here for the love of the course that she helped found.

"It's a great place. Great friends, good sports, it's a place to belong," Jeannie said.

She's not only the fair lady of the fairway, she's also the guardian of the garden. It all keeps her on an even keel.

On the rolling hills of Escondido, an 81-year-old pioneer has discovered the fountain of youth.

"I love sports. It keeps me young," she said.

This late bloomer with the wicked drive is living a life that is way above par.
