Yellow Deli: Valley Center's hidden gem

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - When the folks from Morningstar Ranch went looking for a second location to compliment their Vista deli, they chose a rather remote spot along Lilac Road on the cusp of Valley Center.

"It's about 15 minutes off the 15," Nathan Soles said.

Along a twisty two-lane, they don't have too much worry about competition.

"There's not too many places to eat out here," Nathan said.

And none quite like The Yellow Deli.

"Everything's homemade fresh," Nathan said. "We even bake our own bread, do soups, salads and teas and dessert and fresh sandwiches."

And meals are served in a charming 80-year-old rehabbed ranch house.

"We like to restore things, bring things back to original glory," Nathan said.

And for the folks from Morningstar Ranch, the Yellow Deli is the perfect location.

"We have our farm about a mile and a half away, and we have produce here too. So in addition to the same kind of menu, we have produce picked from the garden we have out front. You can come get a sandwich, buu some beets and carrots and lettuce and head on home and make a nice salad for dinner," Nathan said.

The Yellow Deli in Valley Center also offers a line of handcrafted breads.

Their mission is to be neighborly.

"The whole purpose of our deli is to have a place to serve people, to meet people," Nathan said. "That's another reason we wanted to have a farm stand, was to get to know our neighbors.

"We're open Sunday through Friday, closed on Saturday," he said.

Along Lilac Road, a commune shares their love of the land and their simple way of life with anyone who cares to break bread.
