Mission Brewery: Ballpark brew

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The brewmasters on the corner of 14th and L are men on a mission to bring their quality handcrafted ales to the East Village.

"We started brewing in February this year. The tasting room that we're standing in opened six weeks ago," Dan Selis said.

Mission Brewery offers an insider's view of a hallowed hall.

"This is the historic Wonder Bread building. This room that you're in was built in 1894," Dan said. "When I walked into the space, it was absolutely perfect for a brewery. All the bricks are original. The posts that you see right here are original. This is the silo that Wonder Bread used, we think since the 30s. They filled it twice a day with 200,000 pounds of flour."

Mission is refurbishing the silo to use in its brewing process.

"We are the first full-scale production brewery in downtown San Diego since 1955," Dan said.

And they've designed the tasting room so patrons have front row seats for the entire brewing spectacle.

"We built this facility so that people are in the presence of the equipment," Dan said.

And no trip to the Mission Brewery would be complete without sampling the product.

"You can come into the tasting room and have a pint or a taster. We can actually deliver kegs out into the lot for Petco," Dan said.

I asked Dan what happens if the proposed downtown football stadium becomes a reality.

"There's a lot of people who say that it will happen. There's a lot of people who say it won't happen. I'll worry about it when it does happen," he said. "If the stadium comes down here, we're on the 50 yard line."

In the meantime, the Mission Brewery remains on the front line of East Village redevelopment.

"Normal hours are 12 to 8 (p.m.) Monday through Saturday, 12 to 5 on Sunday," Dan said.

On the corner of 14th and L, these brewmasters are on a mission to combine fermentation and preservation. So far, it's mission accomplished.
