Vista Strawberry Festival gets under way

Posted: Updated:

VISTA (CNS) - The Vista Strawberry Festival gets under way Saturday with a fashion show, pie-eating contest and workshop for budding romance writers.

The two-day festival includes just about every food and drink that can be made with strawberries, including wines and beers.

A queen also will be crowned as part of the Strawberry Festival Pageant, based on interviews with judges, a formal gown competition and "strawberry-wear" -- in which contestants show off red, pink and white ensembles.

Competition in the pie-eating contest will be divided into five age groups. Local merchants are supplying the prizes for several other contests, include a Ms. Strawberry Shortcake pageant for girls 5-7, a kids' costume contest and one for the largest and most unusual strawberry. Store-bought berries count.

Live music, dance and karate exhibition is on tap as well. And the Romance Writers of America will hold workshops on writing, publishing and on how to find an agent or editor.

The festival, held along Main Street, also includes volleyball at Vista Magnet Middle School.
