SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Calmer winds are helping firefighters make progress on a wildfire that's threatening homes in the Kern River Valley.

The "cove fire" broke out shortly after 12 p.m. Friday in the Sequoia National Forest near Lake Isabella.

Nearly 1400 acres have burned, but as of Saturday afternoon, the fire is at 45 percent containment.

One hundred homes in South Lake were threatened, and some 400 residents have voluntarily evacuated.
