Beach day bummer for holiday weekend

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Potentially damaging winds will be howling across San Diego County mountains and deserts Sunday, thanks to a southerly jet stream, and scattered showers are possible Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service issued high wind warnings, signifying sustained winds of more than 39 mph, for the mountains and deserts through 6 p.m.

Gusts up to 60 mph are possible, and are dust and sand storms are possible in desert areas.

Along the coast and in the valleys, lower-level wind advisories will take effect at 9 a.m., with winds out of the west forecast at 15-25 mph. Gust up to about 35 mph are possible though 6 p.m.

The day is expected to start cloudy, with a chance of scattered showers through the morning hours. Partly cloudy skies are forecast for the afternoon, with highs in the low and mid 60s.

NWS forecasters put the chance of measurable rain today at 50 percent.

Desert highs will top out in the low 70s.

Memorial Day should be warmer and calmer.
