SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Five people were arrested for drunken driving Sunday at a checkpoint manned by officers from throughout the county.

Officers from the Sheriff's Department, Probation Department, and San Diego, Chula Vista, National City and Coronado police stations conducted this multi-agency checkpoint in Imperial Beach last night, Chula Vista Police spokesman Bernard Gonzales said.

Out of the 2,136 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint, five drivers were arrested for drunken driving. Of those arrested, one person had a previous conviction for drunken driving.

Additionally, 12 vehicles were impounded because drivers did not have valid licenses, Gonzales said. This operation was part of the Repeat Offender Prosecution and Awareness Program sponsored by the California Office of Traffic Safety.
