Rhymes of remembrance

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The beaches are packed, the backyard barbeques underway, but it's important that we remember that this is a day to honor those who gave their lives for this country. In this poem, Larry Himmel pays tribute to our fallen heroes.

Before we light the coals and fire up the barbeque,

Blend up the margaritas, put out the chips and salsa too,

Lets take a moment to remember the ones we never knew

Who when called to serve their country died for me and you.

Those who fought in World War II are sadly fading from these parts

So we must never forget their sacrifice and keep them in our hearts.

And all around the globe, whenever some conflict for democracy starts

Young men and women answer the call, and quickly he or she departs.

They leave their homes and their families and their neighborhood

In some cases to fight for a policy that's not completely understood.

But along the way to being a hero, they see the greater good

And fight for all the principals, for which our country stood.

In today's global conflicts, missions are often anything but concise.

Yet at their crossroads moment, these brave soldiers never thought twice.

For our freedoms we hold so precious they made the ultimate sacrifice

While freeing some fledgling populace from the grip of a tyrant's vice.

And regardless of your view of war with all its casualties

You really can find no fault with brave men and women such as these.

So today, maybe take a moment and get down on your knees

To remember their unselfish acts and pray for their families.

Anyone who has ever given their lives in some conflict or fray.

Today they should always be remembered in each and every way.

For their selfless acts of valor, really what can you say

Except that we are so proud and thankful on this Memorial Day.
