Body found inside warehouse fire in Barrio Logan

San Diego (CBS8) - Black smoke billowed into the air, across Interstate 5 and the Coronado Bridge just before 7:30 p.m. Monday as a fire took over a warehouse in the 1800 block of National Avenue in the Barrio Logan area.

Miquel Valdez, who lives across the street from the warehouse says, he saw the smoke and ran to the fire station just a few doors down to let them know about the fire.

"You couldn't see the Coronado Bridge at all," explained Valdez, who was shooting video of the heavy smoke with his cell phone camera. "You couldn't see Interstate 5, you couldn't see nothing."

The heavy smoke caused some concern for drivers on the nearby bridge and interstate, but CHP didn't have to shut it down.

It took more than 50 firefighters about 22 minutes to knock down the blaze.

The Deputy Fire Chief confirms to News 8 that upon a further search of the building a person was found dead, though he didn't know the identity of the person.

Antonio Cardenas and his family run their 12 year old produce business out of the building. He says he left at around 5:00 p.m. Monday and got a call from a friend about two hours later.

He and his family raced down to the scene to see their dreams going up in smoke and confirms that a person did live in the back of the building.

"I lost everything," Cardenas said.

The Cardenas family says they're holding onto faith and each other to get through this tragedy.
