Swimmers beware: big waves and strong rip currents are here

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Inclement weather along the San Diego coastline on Saturday and Sunday made beach attendance for the Memorial Day weekend the second lowest in the past five years, authorities said.

Even better weather on Monday couldn't beat the slump due to constant wind that led to poor ocean conditions, according to San Diego City Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum.

An estimated 351,600 people flocked to city of San Diego beaches over the three-day weekend, down from 786,200 the same time last year, Lerum said, noting that the lowest Memorial Day weekend beach attendance record in the past five years occurred in 2008, with a mere 234,200 people attending.

Lifeguards performed 91 water rescues over this year's Memorial Day weekend and administered 128 medical aids, according to the lieutenant.
