RANCHO PENASQUITOS (CNS/CBS 8) - A bicyclist was killed and at least one other person was injured tonight when a sport utility vehicle crashed off state Route 56 in Rancho Penasquitos and tumbled onto a bike path alongside the freeway, authorities reported.

"The SUV went over the embankment, " said Sgt. John Tyler of the California Highway Patrol. "As it went over the embankment, it collided with two bicyclists using the bike lane adjacent to the freeway."

The fatal accident just west of Black Mountain Road was reported shortly before 6:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The bicyclist died at the scene. Medics took at least one other person to a trauma center for treatment of serious injuries.

"Nobody would be prepared for something like this," said bicyclist Joel Yalung. "You'd think it would be safe on the bike path."

"You can't protect yourself from something like this," added cyclist Julie Adams. "It just happened, and I'm sure the person in the car feels really bad. It's tragic."

It was not immediately clear why the eastbound sport utility vehicle careened off the freeway, after which it went over an embankment and a chain- link fence, hit several bicyclists and came to rest upside-down on the pedestrian/bike trail.
