Crank it up! The Rock and Roll Marathon is Sunday

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 32,000 runners are expected to take part in Sunday's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon over San Diego streets that will be lined with about 45 live bands and cheerleaders.

There is also a half-marathon, which will feature San Diego's Meb Keflezighi, who in 2009 became the first American man to win the New York Marathon in 27 years.

It will be the first professional race in San Diego for Keflezighi, 35, a graduate of San Diego High School who lives and trains in Mammoth.

Keflezighi is expected to continue running shorter distances before he gives the New York race another try in November, followed by the U.S. Olympic Trials in January.

The 26-mile, 385-yard course begins at Balboa Park, winds through downtown, up state Route 163 to Mission Valley, then turns west along Friars Road to the Morena District, north along Morena Boulevard and south along Mission Bay, with the finish line at South Shores Park.

Highway 163 and other roads along the course will be closed during the morning.

The closures will begin at midnight and some could last until 3 p.m., Sunday, San Diego police Lt. Dave Nisleit said.

Tow-away zones and no-parking areas will be strictly enforced, Nisleit said.
