Gov. Brewer views wildfire from air

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has seen for herself the third-largest wildfire in her state's recorded history.

Brewer took an aerial tour of the Wallow Fire, near the White Mountain community of Alpine, which had grown to 218 square miles, or more than 140,000 acres, by this morning.

Brewer also got a briefing from the fire team's commander.

In terms of size, the Wallow Fire ranks behind Arizona's Rodeo-Chediski Fire in 2002 and the Cave Creek complex fire in 2005.

Meanwhile, crews are trying to protect a church camp and two communities from the Horseshoe Two fire that has burned 140 square miles in far southern Arizona. It's the fifth-largest fire in state history.
