Man who attacked school board candidate sentenced to 270 days in jail

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A man who attacked a Sweetwater Union High School District board candidate outside a Jack in the Box drive-through window in Imperial Beach last fall was sentenced Monday to 270 days in custody.

Andrew Fisak, 26, can serve his nine months in custody in a work furlough program, said South Bay Judge Kathleen Lewis.

Fisak pleaded guilty in April to a felony charge of battery with serious bodily injury for the attack on Andrew Valencia last Oct. 24.

The defendant had faced up to four years in state prison.

Valencia was running for the school board at the time and told investigators that he believed his attackers were trying to stop him from exposing district and campaign corruption, going as far as calling the crime "scripted."

Fisak later told authorities that he hit Valencia after hearing him say something offensive.

Valencia's mouth was gashed and several of his teeth were broken during the 1:30 a.m. assault, authorities said.
