SDG&E files $3.6B "smart grid" plan

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A $3.6 billion plan to overhaul San Diego Gas & Electric's power grid and make greater use of renewable energy was filed with state regulators Monday.

SDG&E's plan to deploy a "smart grid" through the rest of this decade is designed to give customers multiple choices for energy use, and allow for increasing numbers of solar panels and plug-in vehicles.

According to SDG&E, its ratepayers want more real-time data on power usage and rates so they can improve energy efficiency, and they use more rooftop solar power generation systems and electric vehicles than customers of any utility in the country.

Customer expectations of service are keeping pace with technological improvements in computing and communications, company officials wrote in their filing with the California Public Utilities Commission.

The plan calls for the company to modernize its grid by 2020 when SDG&E, like all utilities, is legally mandated to use renewable resources to produce 33 percent of its power.

The document, which also addresses operational efficiency, security and customer privacy, was developed after a series of meetings with customer advocates, government officials, businesses, academia and environmental groups.
