The donation stems from a humanitarian award Roberts received April 7 from HomeAid San Diego, a nonprofit organization which recognized Roberts for his support of housing issues, said a representative for Roberts.
The fourth district representative was joined at the ceremony by members of the San Diego Padres organization and supporters of both the San Diego Center for Children, the city's oldest children's nonprofit organization, and HomeAid San Diego, a national organization which builds transitional housing for temporarily homeless people.
"The humanitarian award is about more than fighting homelessness. It also recognizes distinguished service toward alleviating human suffering," said Barbara Hunter, the organization's board president. "Over the years of partnership with HomeAid San Diego, Ron Roberts has come to exemplify that ideal for all of us."
The organization agreed to donate the playhouse in Roberts' honor to a children's organization, and it was determined the San Diego Center for Children was the best fit.
The San Diego Center for Children is a nonprofit organization that helps kids if trauma, abuse or mental health challenges delay their development.
"We are humbled that Supervisor Ron Roberts has selected the San Diego Center for Children as the home for this wonderful Padres Playhouse," said Dave McCaslin, the center's chief executive officer. "It's often a dream of a child to have a playhouse and Supervisor Roberts' gift will surely make our children feel special."
