SIERRA VISTA, Carrizo. (AP) — A wildfire in Cochise County burning near Sierra Vista has grown to 3,000 acres Monday. The National Park Service says the Monument fire is 0 percent contained.

Crews are focusing on keeping the fire from spreading to the lowlands which are mainly dry grass. However, firefighters are dealing with winds out of the southwest at 7 to 14 mph with gusts to 20 mph.

Meanwhile, the Sulpher Springs Valley Electric Company is attempting to assess power poles and lines in the area of Ash Canyon to Coronado Memorial Road to determine if utility poles were damaged by flames.

SPRINGERVILLE, Ariz. (AP) — The Wallow fire in the White Mountains has now burned 452,155 acres or 706 square miles. The U.S. Forest Service says the fire remains 10 percent contained.

Winds along the fire line Monday are predicted to be out of the southwest at 14 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. The humidity and fuel moisture remains low and that means a potential for flying embers sparking spot fires outside containment lines.

The fire is still active in the Greer area.

Monday's activities for fire crews include mop-up and hazard tree removal in the Alpine, Nutrioso and Greer areas.

So far, 36 outbuildings have been destroyed and 1,200 are threatened.
