Nearly 160 pounds of iguana meat seized at border

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Border agents in San Diego have seized 159 pounds of iguana meat that was being smuggled into the U.S. from Mexico.

Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Jackie Wasiluk says the meat was discovered last week at the Otay Mesa border crossing.

She says it was hidden under fish in three coolers that a U.S. citizen brought back from Mexico. The man claimed he was only bringing in fish.

Wasiluk says the 37-year-old man was turned over to federal Fish and Wildlife authorities and could face criminal charges.

Iguana meat is a traditional delicacy in some parts of Mexico but it's illegal to bring the meat from wild animals into the U.S.
