Runway extension considered at McClellan-Palomar

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego County leaders are considering a runway extension to boost a Carlsbad airport's growth into a commuter hub.

A San Diego County Regional Airport Authority strategic plan calls for adding 1,100 feet of runway to the existing 4,897-foot runway at McClellan-Palomar Airport.

The Board of Supervisors directed its staff on Tuesday to return in 90 days with a cost and feasibility study on runway lengthening.

The North County Times says airport expansion has been discussed for years as the airport has grown into a busy commuter hub. The airport has undergone $155.6 million in upgrades since 1994, with about one-third of that investment from county government.
