MTS and the zoo encourage people to Dump the Pump

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The MTS is teaming up with the San Diego Zoo to celebrate national Dump the Pump Day.

San Diegans are encouraged to leave their cars at home Thursday and use public transportation instead.

Zoo officials say the average car emits 12,000 pounds of C02 each year - the weight of an adult elephant.

County Supervisor Ron Roberts says just one day without a car can make a difference in the environment.

"Driving is less beneficial to all of us. Driving your car less has enormous benefits," said Roberts. "Imagine how many pounds of CO2 would be removed from the air if more people took the transit just one day a week."

MTS will give away prizes at the old town trolley station Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. to those who pledge to Dump the Pump.
