SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Lifeguards and animal control officers rescued a dog Friday from the Luscombs area of Sunset Cliffs, city lifeguards said.

Lifeguards responded to an emergency call about 11:45 a.m. and found an 80-pound Chow in an area of Sunset Cliffs, according to San Diego Lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma. The dog appeared to have been on the cliff for some time.

"We were a little bit weary because we didn't know if he was going to lash out at us," Lerma said of the dog, which was unresponsive and appeared to be suffering from some medical issues.

The dog was determined not to be hostile and rescuers hoisted it to safety, Lerma said. Animal control officer took the dog to be treated.

Rescuers attempted to contact the dog's owner. They did not know how the dog became trapped.
