Some evacuees in AZ, NM return home; Firefighters working to steer fire from Luna, NM

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) — Firefighters are still working to steer a major Arizona wildfire away from the evacuated New Mexico town of Luna.

Some people in other areas evacuated because of blazes around the Southwest have been allowed to return to their homes.

New Mexico State Forestry spokesman Dan Ware says Luna is no longer immediately threatened by flames, after crews worked through the day to move the fire around the community of 200 people.

Elsewhere, firefighters are trying to keep more houses, dry forests and stretches of high desert from being consumed by the flames.

With summer rains still weeks away, forecasters say fire crews across the Southwest will likely have little relief from the weather that has dogged them for days.

Containment on Arizona's big Wallow fire is 38 percent. It's the biggest wildfire in state history.
