SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man in his 20s sustained fatal injuries early Monday when he drove a small sedan into several parked cars and a palm tree in University City, police said.

The fatality happened while the man was driving a 2001 Chevy Prizm at a high rate of speed southbound on Regents Road, near Berino Court, around midnight, according to San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros.

The Prizm eventually came to rest on some utility boxes, Delimitros said, noting that the man died at the scene.

His name was withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

UNIVERSITY CITY (CBS 8) - One person is dead after an overnight car crash in the UTC area.

San Diego police say the car was traveling southbound in the 8000 block of Regents Road at a very high rate of speed.  Around midnight, the driver lost control after crashing into three parked cars, then a palm tree, and finally stopped on top of two utility boxes.

There was one man inside the four door car at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It took several hours for rescue crews to move the car because they were not sure if power from the electric box was going to the car.

SDG&E was able to shut off power to the area.

The scene has been cleaned up and the exact reason why the driver was going so fast is being investigated.
