Fire crews battling East County brush fire

Posted: Updated:

JACUMBA (CNS) - Crews aboard firefighting aircraft worked Tuesday to subdue a wildfire that blackened scores of acres in a remote, undeveloped area the far southeastern reaches of San Diego County.

The blaze erupted for unknown reasons near Interstate 8 and In-Koh-Pah Park Road in Jacumba about 7:30 a.m., according to Cal Fire.

By midday, the flames had scorched about 75 acres, according to Nick Schuler, a battalion chief with the state agency. Due to the ruggedness of the terrain in the area, crews fought the blaze by air alone, aboard four air tankers and four helicopters, he said.

The fire, part of which was burning in Mexico, posed no threats to structures, according to Schuler.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
