Funeral next week for Caltrans worker killed in Mount Hope

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Caltrans employee who was fatally struck by a car in a Mount Hope-area freeway construction zone will be eulogized a week from Wednesday.

Richard Gonzalez of San Ysidro was working near the junction of Interstate 15 and state Route 94 when the accident happened, prompting Caltrans to "revisit and reinforce all aspects of field safety and ... ask the public for help."

Friends, colleagues and family will gather next Wednesday evening in Bonita to remember the married father of two at Glen Abbey Memorial Park and Mortuary on Bonita Road, according to the state transportation agency.

A memorial fund for the Gonzalez family was set up through the California Transportation Foundation.

Gonzalez, whose sons are 12 and 22, began working for Caltrans in 2008 as an equipment operator, and is the third state highway worker killed on the job in less than two months.

On May 4, landscape worker Stephen Palmer, 64, of Jamul was struck by a trolley in National City, and 53-year-old Caltrans employee Jaime Obeso of Imperial was hit by a car June 7 on a job site along Interstate 8 in the El Centro area.

Gonzalez, 52, who was assigned to a cleanup crew, was crossing the road when he was struck about 8:40 a.m. Monday by a motorist going north on I-15 in a white 1990 Cadillac de Ville, according to the CHP.

The driver, a San Diego man whose name was withheld, was checked to make sure he was sober and released.
