Calif. police begin digging for missing girl

Posted: Updated:

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities seeking the remains of a 7-year-old girl who vanished nearly 50 years ago have begun excavating a patch of earth along U.S. Highway 101 in Goleta.

Lt. Paul McCaffrey said Tuesday that investigators have scraped away about three feet of dirt over an area half the size of a tennis court.

The search for the remains of Ramona Price centers on an overpass west of Santa Barbara that was completed shortly after the little girl went missing and is now being replaced.

The excavation is expected to take several days.

Ramona vanished on Sept. 2, 1961, as her family was packing to change homes in Santa Barbara. The girl told her father that she would walk to the new home a few miles away but she never arrived.
