County begins annual "Cool Zone" program

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The County of San Diego started its "Cool Zone" program Wednesday, enabling seniors to go to air-conditioned public buildings on hot days.

Nearly 120 sites are participating in the program this year, including libraries, recreation centers and senior centers. There will be 22 spots open on Sundays.

The sites are marked with a light-blue logo featuring a polar bear.

Low-income, homebound seniors and disabled persons can get a free electric fan through the program if they are unable to go to public building. Bus passes are available to qualified individuals in certain ZIP codes as part of the county-funded effort.

County Health and Human Services Agency officials say the program, which ends Sept. 30, protects the health of senior and helps reduce their energy costs.
