SAN DIEGO (CNS/CBS 8) - A 37-year-old man suspected of bludgeoning of another man with a rock in Hillcrest, leaving him clinging to life in a hospital, was arrested Friday.

"The victim is in grave condition," said Lt. Dan Christman of San Diego Police. "He is not expected to live."

Joshua Larson of San Diego was arrested as he drove away from a Hillcrest home about 6:15 p.m., San Diego Police Department Lt. Ernie Herbert said. Larson was booked at San Diego County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

The 31-year-old victim walked out of a canyon in the 1300 block of Washington Street and flagged down a passing driver about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to San Diego police.

"The man was only able to tell the motorist he had been hit in the head with a rock," Herbert said.

Medics took the victim, whose name has been withheld pending family notification, to a trauma center, where his condition deteriorated. His injuries are considered life-threatening.

"The victim had been assaulted with a rock," Christman said. "He was transported to a local trauma center, and his injuries became more severe and he is not expected to live."

"The preliminary investigation has revealed the victim was (attacked) during an altercation with someone known to him, but it is not known what the altercation was about or who the other person is," Herbert said.

Authorities asked anyone with information about the case to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. Tipsters may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
