Local reaction to New York's same-sex marriage law

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diego's gay community is reacting to New York's same sex marriage law.

Dwayne Crenshaw is the Executive Director of San Diego Pride-- which organizes the annual LGBT pride festival and parade.

He says Friday's historic events in New York are a cause for celebration here in San Diego.

"Today is a day of pride. Anytime that a legislature in our government recognizes equality for all of its citizens is an exciting day. Whether that be in New York or here in California."

In 2008, gay marriage was legal in California for several months, but later in the year, voters passed prop 8, which declared marriage to be solely between a man and a woman.

A lawsuit challenging whether it's constitutional is currently in appeals court.
