4 hospitalized after speeding driver ran stop sign, fled scene

SHERMAN HEIGHTS (CNS) - A speeding driver ran stop sign Saturday at a Sherman Heights intersection, caused a collision that left four people hospitalized, and then ran from the scene, police said.

The driver of a green Ford Escort wagon carrying three passengers was traveling east at "a high rate of speed," in the 2600 block of Island Avenue just before noon, according to San Diego police Officer Frank Cali.

The Escort's driver approached a stop sign at the intersection of 25th Street and Island Avenue, but did not stop, Cali said. The Escort broadsided a blue Jeep travelling north on 25th Street.

The Escort's driver got out and ran south on 25th Street, leaving three injured passengers in that car, Cali said. The two passengers who rode in the Escort's back sustained head injuries, and the front passenger had injuries to his hip and leg.

The driver of the Jeep was also injured, and all were all taken to hospitals.

No description of the suspect was not available.
