Man killed after van slams into wheelchair

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man in a wheelchair was fatally struck by a van in the Midway District, police said Sunday.

A van struck the man on Midway Drive near where it intersects West Point Loma and Sports Arena boulevards shortly after 9 p.m., San Diego police Sgt. Jorge Leon said.

The driver had been on West Point Loma Boulevard and stopped at a red light at Midway Drive, Leon said.

As he prepared to turn right onto Midway Drive, a 51-year-old man in a wheelchair entered the intersection in front of the van and was struck as the driver started his turn, Leon said.

The man, whose name was withheld, died at the scene, he said.

The body lay in the crosswalk on Midway Drive, and the wheelchair wedged beneath the van, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

"Jesus Christ is Lord" was printed on the side of the van, along with the website address Sam Kholi Ministry.org., according to the Union-Tribune.

Websites associated with Kholi say he runs a payroll company, a trucking company called the Jesus Christ is Lord Travel Center, and Kholi Enterprises based at a facility on Hancock Street, not far from where the accident occurred, the newspaper reported.

MIDWAY (CBS 8)- A man in a wheelchair was killed Saturday night, after a van crashed into him.

It happened around late this evening on Sports Arena Boulevard and Midway Drive.

Authorities at the scene say the victim was crossing West Point Loma Boulevard, when a driver in a church van while turning right onto Midway Drive.

The driver of the van was talking to authorities and was visibly upset.

Surrounding streets were shut down for the investigation, and were expected to remain closed for several hours.

The victim's identity is not known at this time. It is also not known if any charges will be filed against the driver.
