NEW YORK (AP) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is being greeted by cheering supporters as he leads New York City's gay pride parade, two days after signing a bill legalizing same-sex marriage.

Revelers are holding signs that say "Thank you, Gov. Cuomo" and "Promise kept." Cuomo says New York has sent a message to the nation that "it is time for marriage equality."

One of the world's oldest and largest gay pride parades has turned into a carnival-like victory celebration through the streets of Manhattan. One couple came with both dressed as brides.

Christine Careaga says her mother called crying tears of joy after the state senate vote Friday. She says: "Every mother wants her child to be happily married.

Parade organizers expect half a million people to participate in today's march in New York City.
