Prelim. for four men accused in home invasion robbery

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A preliminary hearing is scheduled to begin Tuesday for four men accused in a home invasion robbery in which a Rancho San Diego family was tied up and their dog was shot.

Two of the defendants -- Steve Goria and David Gates -- are also among 10 people charged in federal court in an illegal gambling scheme involving the basketball program at the University of San Diego.

A judge will decide at the end of the preliminary hearing whether there's enough evidence to order Goria, Gates, Christopher Salmu and Ranse Shaba to stand trial for the home invasion robbery, which occurred last December.

Sheriff's authorities said all four defendants carried out the Dec. 15 robbery on Wildwind Drive, taking cash and jewelry.

During the crime, one of the victims was pistol-whipped, his daughter had a gun held to her head, and their dog was shot. The animal survived.
