Washington Street trolley closes for major upgrade

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Starting Saturday, the San Diego Trolley's Washington Street station will be closed for up to six weeks to accommodate a major upgrade.

The Metropolitan Transit System is replacing station platforms to pave the way for newer, low-floor light-rail vehicles, like the ones used on the Green Line through Mission Valley and the East County.

Construction work requires boarding platforms to be temporarily relocated at some stops.

The area around the Washington Street station, which needed to be closed entirely, can be accessed by Bus Route 10 from the Old Town Transit Center, according to the MTS.

The agency plans to upgrade all stations between Old Town and the 12th Street at Imperial Avenue stop by next year. Improvements will also include new shelters, convenient locations for Compass Card validators and next arrival signs.

Upgrades along the rest of the Blue and Orange lines will continue through 2014.
